STEAMBOAT ACADEMY OF MUSIC

Drum and Percussion Lessons

 Overview
Our percussion instructors teach rock, blues, metal, country and classical styles on all kinds of percussion  instruments. Beginners work on easy beat combinations, simple rhythms and riffs, sight reading and theory. Each lesson will challenge you with a new technique or music theory, and ends with something fun – such as your favorite riff or playing to your favorite song. We employ a variety of  method books based on student needs and preferences, and encourage students to bring smartphones or CDs to their lessons to learn their favorite beats.

What’s the #1 reason to study percussion or drums at the Academy?
Our  instructors are warm and friendly, and get to know each student and parent on a personal level. We work with you to craft a lesson plan that fits your individual needs and the student's favorite type of music. Whether you're playing in local bands, a seven year old taking their first lesson, or an adult returning to the the drums after a long absence, we’ll help you set goals to achieve your musical aspirations
What music styles do you teach?
We teach all styles, from rock, pop, jazz, and blues to metal, country and classical – on all types of percussion instruments.
What will I learn from percussion or drum lessons at the Academy?
Beginner students can expect to work on simple beats and rhythms, sight reading and theory. Our instructors balance musicianship and fun by making sure that each lesson presents a new technical challenge or theory concept, and ends with something fun, such as your favorite riff or drumming to your favorite song. We use a variety of method books, and encourage students to bring their smartphone or CDs to their lesson to learn the beats to their favorite tunes.
Will I need to purchase an instrument to take lessons at the Academy?
All you need for your first lesson is an inexpensive drum pad and a notebook.  We  also have both electronic and acoustic drum kits for you to play at your lesson. When you are ready, we can help you purchase a full drum kit for  a reasonable price.  If you already have a percussion instrument  at home that's easy to transport, bring it to your lesson and we will gladly evaluate it for you.

WORRIED about NOISE? Try our electronic drum kit with headphones to see if  it might be the right purchase for your home practice.
